Despite the recent increase of political
stability and peace after decades of war, Cambodia still suffers from a lack of basic infrastructure and resources, particularly
within the countryside. Poverty, shortage of labor in the family and the low level of parental education, certain segments
of the population perceive that education is not imperative for themselves or their families. As a result the following issues
dominate both the private and public education sector in Cambodia
Literacy
Over 65% of the total population
is illiterate, with the illiteracy rates for women at a staggering 78%. With over 40% of the population under 14 years of
age, there is intense pressure on the government to provide adequate educational infrastructure.
Outside of the major population centres, basic healthcare education,
community hygienic practices and the importance of sanitation information is sparse, mostly reliant on outreach projects run
by NGO’s. Reproductive health services, including ante-and post-natal care and screening for sexually transmitted infections
(STIs) for both men and women are non-existent in rural areas.
Information Technology
Whereas in the West IT is a core subject and is also used as a tool to promote the integration
of all subjects in education, due to the high cost of equipment and electricity, not to mention accessibility and security
issues, IT labs and any education associated with them is simply not available in rural areas.
